#ElderWisdom for Graduates of 2020

The residents at The Village of Riverside Glen share their #ElderWisdom with Graduates of 2020.

  • Learn as much as they possibly can. Do lots of reading and don’t hesitate to sit down and do a little homework on their own. You will benefit from it in years to come.
  • Be sure you’re early for work, never be late. Make sure you have a good breakfast before you go to work. Make sure you get along with all of your colleagues. Have a good dinner and be sure your done work early.
  • Really be themselves and enjoy themselves but also think of others.
  • We all have dreams, don’t wait to fulfill them, make that your goal. When you turn 40, make a bucket list and make sure you covered everything by the time you turn 50 because when you get older things happen and you cannot keep going to fulfill your dreams. Dream high, fly high and get it done.
  • Always be yourself. Be on time. Respect everyone. Be happy.
  • Enjoy every minute of everyday because the time passes so quickly and we can’t get it back. Hang on to every moment of everyday.
  • Your future is bright. We wish you all the best and may your dreams come true.
  • Have a good time. Follow your passions.
  • Try something new and enjoy it!

Sharing #ElderWisdom on the Neighbourhood

The Colchester Neighbourhood at the Village at St. Clair brought the #ElderWisdom Green bench to the neighbourhood for an afternoon. The neighbours and team members spent a few minutes chatting and engaging in meaningful conversation while the neighbours shared their #ElderWisdom! Many enjoyed a special treat of ice cream together as well.

Here is some of the #ElderWisdom that was shared by the Colchester neighbours:

  • Treat others with respect!
  • Hard work and my faith in God make me stronger.
  • Encourage young people to get a good education and always save for a rainy day.
  • Try everything! You never know until you try.
  • Always be friendly and smile!
  • Don’t forget to call those you love!

Stay tuned as the village continues the #ElderWisdom conversation year around!

“Laughter is the best medicine” according to Doc.

#ElderWisdom Chalkboard Wall

As a part of our Culture Change Journey Coleman painted a portion of main street with chalkboard paint to encourage meaningful and shared activities and also to promote Gratitude throughout the village.  We have changed the theme of the wall monthly and June was changed to reflect Senior’s Month and Wisdom of the Elder.  We have encouraged team members, residents, family members and volunteers to share some wisdom they have received from an elder in their life, especially those that call Coleman their home.  We have also asked what we can do to help our residents live their best life and here are some of the things we have come up with:

Remember that they are someone’s Grandparent, Mother, Father, etc.  They aren’t just a Resident in a home.  They used to live a life only they can tell.

Keep them active!

Give them a voice and advocate for those that don’t have one.

By providing an opportunity for the residents to try something new and challenge their skills.

Have patience when they ask you to repeat..

By loving them everyday

“Think hard.  Think before you Act”- Betty H

“Don’t get old, you do stupid things”- Doris K

“Never judge a book by it’s cover”- Tom P

“Love every moment”- Bruce P

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”- Doris K

We look forward to seeing what else make it onto the wall.  We also can’t wait for June 27th when we get to bring down 3 residents to sit on the bench and converse and share some wisdom with the community in Barrie!  –Event Details
